My Campaign Song

Been thinking about presidential campaigns, and how they often have theme songs. I looked up the subject online, and found some examples. It's funny how whenever Walgreens pipes in "Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow," I remember Bill Clinton's campaign in 1992. And while both George W. Bush and Barack Obama used Brooks and Dunn's "Only In America," the former's use of the song seemed almost ironic. Anyway, I began to think....if I were running for president, what would mine be? After some inner debate, I chose this.

"32 Flavors"
by Ani DiFranco

Squint your eyes and look closer
I'm not between you and your ambition
I am a poster girl with no poster
I am thirty-two flavors and then some
And I'm beyond your peripheral vision
So you might want to turn your head
'Cause someday you're going to get hungry
And eat most of the words you just said
Both my parents taught me about good will
And I have done well by their names
Just the kindness I've lavished on strangers
Is more than I can explain
Still there's many who've turned out their porch lights
Just so I would think they were not home
And hid in the dark of their windows
Till I'd passed and left them alone
And god help you if you are an ugly girl
Course too pretty is also your doom
'Cause everyone harbors a secret hatred
For the prettiest girl in the room
And god help you if you are a phoenix
And you dare to rise up from the ash
A thousand eyes will smolder with jealousy
While you are just flying past
I'm not trying to give my life meaning
By demeaning you
And I would like to state for the record
I did everything that I could do
I'm not saying that I'm a saint
I just don't want to live that way
No, I will never be a saint
But I will always say
Squint your eyes and look closer
I'm not between you and your ambition
I am a poster girl with no poster
I am thirty-two flavors and then some
And I'm beyond your peripheral vision
So you might want to turn your head
'Cause someday you might find you're starving
And eating all of the words you said

The Ursuline Anthem

I went to a Catholic, all-female high school called Ursuline Academy in the late '90's. This was a favorite song of ours. In a lot of ways, it was about us....

"Only the Good Die Young"
by Billy Joel
Come out, Virginia-
Don't let me wait.
You Catholic girls start much too late.
Ah! But sooner or later it comes down to fate.
I might as well will be the one.
Well they showed you a statue-
Told you to pray.
They built you a temple and locked you away.
Ah! But they never told you the price that you'd pay.
For things that you might have done...
Only the good die young.
That's what I said!
Only the good die young.
Only the good die young...
You mighta heard I run with a dangerous crowd.
We ain't too pretty, we ain't too proud.
We might be laughin' a bit too loud.
Ah! But that never hurt no one...
So come on Virginia!
Show me a sign-
Send up a signal; I'll throw you a line.
The stained glass curtain you're hidin' behind-
Never lets in the sun...
Darlin' only the good die young!
Oh woe woe woe woe!
I tell ya only the good die young.
Only the good die young...
You got a nice white dress and a party on your confirmation!
You've got a brand new soul.
Mmm, and a cross of gold.
But Virginia they didn't give you quite enough information!
You didn't count on me-
When you were counting on your rosary.
Oh woe woe!
And they say there's a Heaven,
For those who will wait.
Some say it's better,
But I say it ain't!
I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints.
The sinners are much more fun...
You know that only the good die young!
Oh woe woe baby bay!
I tell ya only the good die young!
Only the good die young...
Said your mother told you all that I could give you was a reputation!
Ah! She never cared for me.
But did she ever say a prayer for me?
Oh woe woe!
Come out, come out, come out!
Virginia don't let me wait!
You Catholic girls start much too late!
Sooner or later it comes down to fate.
I might as well be the one...
You know that only the good die young!
Tell ya baby!
You know that only the good die young!
Only the good die young.
Only the gooood!
Only the good die young.
Oo oo oooo
Oo!
Oo oo oo oo
Oooo oo!
Oo oo oo
Oo!
Oo oo oo oo
Oooo oo!
Oo oo oooo
Oo!
Oo oo oo oo
Oooo oo!
Only the good die young!
Only the good die young...

A Song For Today

Case Of You

by Joni Mitchell

Just before our love got lost you said
"I am as constant as a northern star"
And I said "Constantly in the darkness
Where's that at?
If you want me I'll be in the bar"

On the back of a cartoon coaster
In the blue TV screen light
I drew a map of Canada
Oh Canada
With your face sketched on it twice
Oh you're in my blood like holy wine
You taste so bitter and so sweet

Oh I could drink a case of you darling
Still I'd be on my feet
oh I would still be on my feet

Oh I am a lonely painter
I live in a box of paints
I'm frightened by the devil
And I'm drawn to those ones that ain't afraid

I remember that time you told me you said
"Love is touching souls"
Surely you touched mine
'Cause part of you pours out of me
In these lines from time to time
Oh, you're in my blood like holy wine
You taste so bitter and so sweet

Oh I could drink a case of you darling
And I would still be on my feet
I would still be on my feet

I met a woman
She had a mouth like yours
She knew your life
She knew your devils and your deeds
And she said
"Go to him, stay with him if you can
But be prepared to bleed"

Oh but you are in my blood
You're my holy wine
You're so bitter, bitter and so sweet

Oh, I could drink a case of you darling
Still I'd be on my feet
I would still be on my feet

Hungarian Wedding Song

This is a very strange but pleasant tori tune I've had in my head all day:
When you said, you'd marry me
I thought you meant you'd wanted too
Then I thought you'd like to
Maybe on a Tuesday
All the dead are coming
I heard they'll be dressing
Something kind of maggoty
Rolling with a froppity.....
......what's a froppity, btw?

Getting my dad's high school fight song as a ringtone for him....
Having another attack of endrometriosis today. Feel pretty melllow, now, because I took my pill, but I know it could come back. Things have been pretty strange lately. I guess mostly I've been depressed. Just tired of all the bullshit in life. People expect too much out of me, and give me nothing in return. Thus is life, I guess
Ugh. Taking a sick day and drinking copious amounts of diet Coke, trying to quell a stomachache. Going to work on the computer til noon, then dust in the living room. I might attempt my CVS trip I have to make today, earlier than planned. So I'm pretty much up in the air, as far as having a schedule today goes.

The last of my sanity

I shattered last night. Between Andrew and Carrie and all of the cruelty and abuse.....I lost all the pieces,  and I don't want th...
